Just a brief status update – I’ll be at SXSW Interactive from Friday to Tuesday. If I don’t reply to any of your emails or calls, please bear with me.

I’m writing this from New York, more concretely from a friend’s apartment where I have access to wireless. It seems there is still not one decent prepaid or other short-term data plan for cell phones in the US. (Hint to all providers, and most importantly to my new provider O2: Offer flexible roaming packages – one month US data flat for $39,99, one month France data flat for €29,99 or whatever. Just do it!) So I’ve been hopping from wireless to wireless and cafe to cafe for the last few days. Again, if I don’t reply in time, you know why.

I’m really curious to experience my first SXSW – everybody I talk to tells me it’s one of the great conferences. Since the schedule is totally packed and so many parties required to RSVP long ago, I’m not even going to plan it out in detail. Instead, my travel buddy Igor and I will be going with the flow.

What I’m particularly interested in is to talk to US startups who’re interested in coming to Germany, and of course to fellow geeks, and just hang & geek out.

If you’re there and would like to meet up, I won’t make any promises as I’m expecting it to be rather chaotic. But feel free to ping me anytime so we can see if we can make it work! Best way is probably through Twitter (http://twitter.com/thewavingcat) or email (peter@thewavingcat.com).

No context, no hidden meaning, just a few slightly geeky graphics that made my day. It’s likely you’ll see them again since I love them and just might try to squeeze them in somewhere, sometime.

It’s the first morning of my New York stay, and boy, am I looking forward to the next four weeks. I packed my laptop (plus two cameras and a ton of chargers and cables) and will be working from here. Thanks to friends I’m staying in a great location right in SoHo (thanks, Parker!) and had an incredibly warm welcome here.

NYC HQ

And of course on my mission to explore not just the city, but also the NYC geek scene, my schedule is filling up quickly. First up: Likemind NY, the original Likemind, where I’m looking forward to meeting founder Noah. (Thomas and I have been hosting Likemind Berlin lately.) Then there’s OpenEverything NYC. Then there’s OpenEverything NYC and a NYC Tech Meetup coming up. Also, there’s Coworking Brooklyn to check out. If you’re at either of those, make sure to say hi!

I’m getting away somewhat from my initial idea to crash at some companies’ offices for a few days at a time and am tending more towards setting up base at a coworking space, but I’m trying to take this as it comes.

I’ve been looking for a good reason to post this image ever since I stumbled over it a few days ago. Against all odd, I couldn’t find one, except for it being an awesome picture. I love it. The whole Domo Eats The Twitter Bird analogy doesn’t really seem to fly, but there you go.

A few days ago MT and I shirt up on Spreadshirt that reads “I work for teh internets“. (Not to be confused with The Google that George W. Bush uses.) We’ve set them up for print-on-demand, and mine just arrived a few days ago. Gotta say, the black-on-black print is pretty kick ass.

A few photos will follow soon. You’ll find a photo below.

Full disclosure: Since we put up the Spreadshirt store, we earn a few bucks with every order.

Update: Here’s a photo of the shirt. Apologies for the poor snapshot quality, but you get the idea. My impression after having the shirt for a few weeks: The print looks fine, it’s kind of fluffy. It does look like it is going to wash out to some degree, though, so I expect the letters to lose some color. Anyway, here goes the photo:

Social Networks have hit mainstream. (The student body on Facebook isn’t enough to really be mainstream, or is it?) How can you tell? Social Networks are increasingly becoming part of popular culture:

And the Daily Show also tells us how, and why:

Quarterlife (the video about a bunch of emotionally, shall we say, charged twenty somethings) already made the jump from web to TV. We’ll see plenty of more cases like this over the coming years. For now, let’s stick to more incidents of social networks picked up in more mainstream media, though: There’s plenty more examples over at Jeremiah’s.

During the last couple of days, particularly at next08, I’ve had a few very funny discussions about the nature of our jobs, and how you can’t explain any of our internet-related jobs to our parents or non-web friends. (Yes, there are some of those out there!)

As M.T. pointed out, one way to go is to simply state the obvious: I work for the Internets.

Since nobody likes repeating themselves, some of us decided to print corresponding shirts. So I quickly threw them together via Spreadshirt:

I work for the Internets (white on black) (Click here to get one.)

My favorite is the slightly more subtle version, black on black. So if you’re hard core geeky, go for this special version “I work for teh Internets”.

There are some more flavors (including a girls version) in the shirt shop. (This is the first time I’m trying to print through Spreadshirt, so please bear with me if the implementation isn’t perfect. Usually, my keingeschenk.de friends and I print our shirts in larger volumes in a Berlin/Kreuzberg print store and distribute them through Shopwindoz. Maybe we’ll do that with this shirt, too, but for the time being, this is it.)

The shirts are all American Apparell. They’re printed on demand, so I haven’t had a chance to see one myself. I just ordered one, will let you know how it turned out. Oh, don’t be surprised about the odd price – it’s set so that shipping costs by Spreadshirt are at a minimum.

Update: The shirt arrived, and in it’s black-on-black print it looks pretty kick ass.
